Every person who serves in H.M forces will at some point will be awarded a medal. This can be for being in a War, conflict zone or bravery. Morris Bright's medals are no exception and they tell their own story of his service. One of finest measures of this man is the DSC or Distinguished Service Cross. This medal is a third level military decoration awarded to Officers. It is awarded for gallantry during active operations against the enemy. Morris's medal was awarded by H.M King George VI in 1941. The DSC as far as we the family know was awarded for an incident in Great Yarmouth, England. It seems the Germans during an air raid hit one or two of the minesweeping flotilla! Morris and the crew went aboard and saved one of the ships from sinking by using wooden spars and mattresses. This action stopped the ship sinking and further blocking up the harbour because other ships were already sinking. The loss of any ship was a loss to the Navy. This was such a brave thing to do and dangerous! This is a fine example of the attitude and training that makes the Royal Navy so special even today. I am forever deeply proud of his actions. These actions were in the finest traditions of the Royal Navy. During World War 2 five thousand DSC's were awarded to the brave Officers who served with distinction
A Commander in the Royal Navy is above the rank of Lieutenant Commander, below the rank of Captain, and is equivalent in rank to a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army. A Commander may command a frigate, destroyer, submarine, aviation squadron or shore installation, or may serve on a Staff
